So I took a chance on this cute wooden bookcase in spite of the low reviews and I'm so glad I did! The unit comes packed very well and has all the tools necessary to build. I highly recommend wearing the provided gloves when putting together. I didn't and I recieved 3 to 4 splinters as I was finishing up my build. A few of the shelves (places where wood isn't seen) can be a bit rough. So please be careful and wear the gloves. I also recommend having someone help you hold the pieces together while you assemble. It makes matching up the holes so much easier. I also recommend wearing a headlamp so you can see through the small holes where the screws go!Now people claim not all the holes line up. Perhaps when putting the door on it appears the holes don't line up perfectly. HOWEVER they don't need to be perfect. The screws will go in and everything will work fine. I almost didn't keep going in my build because the first part you put together is the hinges on the door. One of the hinges appeared to line up better than the other. Had I stopped then I wouldn't have my perfectly built little cabinet! I decided to go for it and just line them up as best I could. Since nobody is going to opening the door and checking if the inside hinges are matched perfectly it doesn't matter! This is real wood and it's a shelving unit with cabinet that you put together yourself! It's not some overly expensive piece of furniture with a heavy duty wood. It is real wood however. Now one of the 5 shelves did come warped and I almost reached out to the company to ask for another shelf be sent but I didn't want to wait to assemble so I decided to put the wonky shelf inside the hidden cabinet. Oh and the cabinet can be placed in different spots nit just thr bottom. If you look closely there are tiny pinholes for the cabinet to be placed. You could actually leave an open cubby on the bottom and put the cabinet up 1 spot. I chose to make mine the way the photo is with the cabinet taking up the bottom 2 shelves. I think the little unit is great. I got the 5 unit size. I can say I would not pay the full price shown of over $100 for this. However for the sale price of under $50 is a great little unit. Oh and it's made by a small company which feels good to support. The unit is nicely glued. It may seem a few shelves aren't perfectly aligned on the underside but I did measure the shelves and they are all pretty uniform in size.Remember when building that the 2 shelves that have rails are for the top and bottom for the backboard to slide into. The screwdriver is for the cabinet only. All the other screws are for the Allen wrench! The bottom shelf is going to be a pain in the butt because you can't just keep turning the Allen wrench when installing. You'll have to do partial turns and remove the wrench multiple times. So it may feel frustrating and slow going. As long as you line everything up correctly and use that headlamp to be sure you are going in the holes you will have this together in no time. I did line up all 4 screws and only put them in a short distance before tightening them down. Just to be sure each shelf would fit properly. I'm nit sure that's necessary but it just seemed right. My 13 year old son even installed a couple shelves. (I was nervous as this was his first building project but he did great!) Just remember when turning to apply a bit if pressure and you wrench won't fall out as you turn. ? Kids don't quite know how to do this. Hehe. You gotta start somewhere and this building project is a good place to do so! Oh I did let dad install the cabinet onto the unit. The cabinet isn't on there perfectly but he did it without help and it is just a little crooked. Barely noticeable. It is very awkward to put on the cabinet in such a small tight space. It's probably only noticeable to me. Had I helped and aligned it better I'm sure it wouldn't be crooked. So I will blame myself for that issue. Overall this is a great unit at a currently affordable price. It's lightweight but real wood. It even comes with guards for the 4 feet of the unit. Little peel off press on foam. I highly recommend and I'm actually going to see what else this company sells. If they have something a bit wider (double the width) I may buy that as well.Hope my review helps you make a decision to go ahead and try this. Remember when building something like this as long as you can see a screw hole even if it seems off a tiny bit that should not matter!!! The holesbare just starter holes and the wood will accept the screws. Just line up best you can and it should be fine. Placement of shelves is all that matters. Please wear those gloves! ?
